Youdhisthir Maharjan
Youdhisthir Maharjan (b. 1984) is a Nepali artist whose practice is rooted in language, transforming reclaimed books and text through labour-intensive, repetitive processes of cutting, erasing, burning, and weaving. Drawing on his Buddhist and Hindu sensibilities, he likens this repetition to the cyclical, unresolved structure of Beckett's Waiting for Godot and to the endless cycles of rebirth, using repeated printing to strip language down until words dissolve into abstract, resonant form.
His fascination with language began early, scavenging thrift stores for books to use as objects of exploration, texts that eventually found their way onto his printing press, where repeated printing stripped language of its inherent meaning until words dissolved into abstract, universally resonant forms. His work is held in collections including the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, the Devi Art Foundation, and the Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai. He lives and works in Boston, USA.
