V. S. Gaitonde

Vasudeo S. Gaitonde (1924-2001) was born in Nagpur and studied at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai. Though briefly associated with the Progressive Artists’ Group, his practice remained deeply independent and introspective.

Gaitonde is regarded as a pioneer of non-objective painting in India, creating works that move away from representation toward a purely meditative engagement with form, colour, and surface. His paintings are characterised by subtle tonal gradations, layered textures, and a quiet, contemplative presence, often developed through a meticulous and time-intensive process.

He is widely considered one of the foremost figures in Indian modern art, known for a body of work that emphasises silence, balance, and an inward, almost spiritual approach to abstraction.
