Thota Vaikuntam (b. 1942) was born in Burugupalli, Karimnagar district, Telangana, to a family that ran a village grocery shop. His practice draws upon the rural Telangana of his upbringing, though his figures resist ethnographic illustration, carrying the visual and social weight of that world through posture, dress, ornament, and gesture rather than narrative detail.
