Sunil Das (1939-2015) was born in Calcutta and trained at the Government College of Art and Craft. He later became associated with the Faculty of Fine Arts at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, where he both studied and taught.

Das is best known for his powerful depictions of horses and bulls, rendered with vigorous line and an intense, expressionistic energy. Working across drawing, painting, and printmaking, his practice emphasised movement, form, and physicality, often pushing the figure toward abstraction.

He is regarded as an important figure in Indian modern art, known for his dynamic approach and his ability to convey force and vitality through line and gesture.
