Natvar Bhavsar
Natvar Bhavsar (b. 1934) was born in Gujarat and studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He moved to New York in the mid-1960s, where he became associated with the post–Abstract Expressionist milieu.
Bhavsar is known for his large-scale abstract paintings created through a distinctive process of layering dry pigment onto the canvas, resulting in luminous, atmospheric surfaces. His work emphasises colour as an immersive field, with compositions that unfold through density, vibration, and subtle transitions.
He is regarded as an important figure in contemporary abstraction, particularly for bridging Indian artistic sensibilities with the language of international modernism.
