Madhvi Parekh
Madhvi Parekh (b. 1942) was born in the village of Sanjaya in Gujarat and is largely self-taught. Moving to Mumbai after her marriage to artist Manu Parekh, she began painting in the 1960s, drawing deeply from memories of her rural upbringing.
Her work is characterised by a distinctive, folk-inspired visual language with flattened perspectives, stylised figures, and vivid colour. Often depicting scenes that merge the everyday with the mythical, her compositions reflect a personal and intuitive approach to storytelling.
Parekh is regarded as an important figure in contemporary Indian art, known for bringing vernacular sensibilities into a modern context through a highly individual practice.
