Ganesh Pyne (1937–2013) was born in Kolkata and studied at the Government College of Art and Craft. Associated with the post-Independence generation of Indian artists, he developed a deeply personal visual language shaped by memory, mythology, and literature.

Working primarily in tempera, Pyne created intimate, meticulously layered compositions characterized by muted palettes, luminous surfaces, and enigmatic figures. Drawing from Bengali folklore, personal experience, and allegorical narratives, his paintings inhabit a space between reality and imagination, often exploring themes of mortality, solitude, and transformation.

He is regarded as one of the most distinctive voices in modern Indian art, celebrated for a practice that combined technical mastery with a profound sense of psychological and poetic depth.
