Bhuri Bai (b. 1968) was born in Pitol, a village in Madhya Pradesh's Jhabua district, into the Bhil community. Self-taught, she learned by observing the ritual Pithora wall paintings of her village before being encouraged by artist J. Swaminathan to move her practice onto paper and canvas.

Her work is known for its accumulation of dots, through which trees, animals, and figures gradually emerge, rendered in bold, unmixed colour that moves between narrative and pattern. Nature appears throughout as kin and memory rather than backdrop.

She is regarded as a pioneering figure in Indian contemporary art, being the first woman artist from the Bhil community to paint on paper, and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2021.
