Achutan Ramachandran (b. 1935) was born in Kerala and trained at Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University. His early works were marked by an expressionist intensity, but a significant shift occurred following his engagement with the tribal communities of Rajasthan, which reshaped his visual language.
Drawing from these experiences as well as close observation of nature, Ramachandran developed a richly detailed style characterised by vibrant colour, intricate patterning, and rhythmic compositions. His later works reflect a sustained engagement with the natural world, combining monumentality with an almost meditative attention to detail.
He is regarded as a major figure in modern Indian art, whose practice bridges personal experience, indigenous traditions, and a deeply observed relationship with nature.
